Figure a Sea
“This sublime new dance work embraces wonder”
The New York Times
Figure a Sea is an exciting collaboration between Cullberg Ballet company and two icons – choreographer Deborah Hay and multidisciplinary artist and composer Laurie Anderson.
Deborah Hay was a founding member of the 1960s artists collective Judson Dance Theatre, which had a profound influence on the perception and practice of dance, foreshadowing the advent of postmodernist dance.
Hay’s unique choreographic language is characterized by meticulous technique alongside minimalist expressiveness. Using ease, accuracy, visibility, ambiguity and uniformity as the key elements of her creation, in Figure a Sea Hay draws on the dancers’ intelligence, willingness, humor, and beauty. With transient and irreproducible intimacy, Cullberg dancers unfold an ocean of human tenderness, movement that falls onto the white stage like silk, a body that meets mysterious siren song and uplifting bird singing, the profound sounds created by Anderson.
Figure a Sea brings together two of the great voices of the 20th century and one of the most experienced and interesting dance companies working in Europe today. For 60 minutes, the dancers and the stage become a sea of infinite possibilities, and we dive into a gentle, mesmerizing and magical meditation.
