“Throngs of fleeting and beautiful situations […] violence and gentleness forever mixed together.” Le Monde, 2013

Acclaimed veteran Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues uses simple elements from her everyday environment to create the hypnotic storm into which she places her dancers. Their bodies fragile and exposed, oscillate between the struggle to survive and total surrender to the raging ocean which envelops them. Fated to share this immense and overpowering encounter, they create fascinating movement both as a group and as individuals in a ceaseless and mesmerizing torrent.

PINDORMA presents a physical, sensual and spiritual landscape in a constant state of flux. Its visual and motive aesthetic is similarly unceasing in its oscillation between endless fragility and existential shock. Rodrigues places the audience on the stage, around the dancers, allowing us a rare intimacy and inviting us to delve with them into the eye of this exhilarating theatrical storm.

Rodrigues has managed her dance company since 2004 in the heart of the Maré ‘favela’ of Rio de Janeiro. Her work is intimately connected to this complex, poor and violence ridden environment. She has stated with regard to her dancers that their bodies bear the burden of the place and its geography, that through it they tell us something of that which once existed and is no more. Inspiring and thought provoking, Rodrigues’ work holds within it the possibility of suturing, resonating and changing reality.
