For choreographers Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, the enormous number of dance moves that come from the dance floors of clubs is a topic of study. Frequenters of the many clubs along the London–New York route since their teenage years, the two choreographers turned the dance floor into a place of training, development and anthropological observation. Their performance provides an extravagant, ritualistic and unique glimpse into a world where the clubbers are the choreographers, the performers and the audience.

In this performance, twerking, Jamaican dancehall, krump, and house — just a few of the dance styles that have taken over the dance floor — reach a point of outrageous ecstatic celebration in all its frenetic, colorful, sexual and even brutal variations. Five unrestrained virtuoso dancers, together with DJs from the London club scene, offer us a tour of the sweaty subconscious of the clubbing world — the biggest dance ritual, which attracts millions of people each weekend.

Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud have been collaborating since 2005, creating a variety of works that deal with anthropological observation of frenetic dance in the modern and primitive eras. The work they present here was produced at the Kyoto Experiment performing arts festival in 2014.

 From the critics:
“The choreography borrows from the ballroom scene as well as dancehall and krump, and yes there are moments when the performers (three female, two male) twerk: all in a row. They’re a lot better than Miley Cyrus.” (Exeunt Magazine, March 2015)

“Close to trance, the brilliant gang walks out of the stage exhausted, while the audience only have to make their way to a club. Cheerfully.” (LIBÉRATION, October 2012)
