Veteran director, hypnotic artist and one of the most phenomenal performers in the world of theatre of the past twenty years, Angélica Liddell, delves into the farthest and darkest reaches of human nature in her latest work.

And what will I do with this sword? takes as its point of departure two incidents which occurred in Paris; the atrocious crime committed in 1981 by a Japanese student, who murdered and then ate his fellow classmate, and the November 2015 terror attack at the Bataclan. Liddell takes us on a journey from Tokyo to Paris and back again. We are lead from logic and reason to the inconceivable, from morality to animalism and all the way into the deepest recesses of tragedy’s very origin.

Liddell creates a dazzling visual language with which she gradually builds a shattering movement. At its center lies the conceptual-tragic trifecta of beauty-eroticism-death, a journey to the darkest depths of human nature, that ultimately manages to nonetheless leave us with a modicum of hope.

With a stage presence of monumental proportions, Liddell confronts the crowd, as well as herself as an artist, with the inherent contradiction between beauty and morality. She invokes a dark and primordial energy, challenging us to delve into the essence of violence and its relation to the nature of poetics and the very material from which the artwork is forged.

And what will I do with this sword? first appearing at the last Avignon festival, allows us to imagine humanity imploding, disappearing completely and being reborn once again as an archaic and primal being.
