A Greeting from the Festival Director & the Artistic Director
Welcome to the Israel Festival 2017,
New theatrical languages, social and cultural contemplations, blurring of the boundaries between disciplines and new, surprising viewer perspectives – we invite you to a spirited dialogue about contemporary art.
In 2016 our program focused on “performative tribes,” artists who examined norms and their underlying social fabric while exploring the concept of live “spectacle.”
2017 turns its attention to the individual, personal identity, definitions and barriers. Are the tools with which we examine and define individualism at all relevant? How may individual transformation be imagined? From Robert Wilson in Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, to the formalism of Lucinda Childs in DANCE and the amalgamation of modernity and tradition in the work of Israel Galván, the festival explores the journey of the individual through both internal and external structures, as they are drawn and immersed into wider contexts devoid of social or political hierarchy.
The program presents art that is in search of its own expression and independence in the face of the present zeitgeist in which we live: the ever exacerbating social and economic divide, national extremism and terror, the erosion of fundamental democratic values and artistic freedom of expression, technological advancement alongside utter helplessness in the face of the forces of nature, unprecedented access to information and the ethical questions that come with it.
In a process whose purpose is to reexamine the relationship between the audience and the theatrical space as an arena congruent to performance, the festival this year will focus on the Jerusalem Theatre’s complex of halls. The theatrical sphere will offer a place for public gathering and exploration, both peaking in “Night Shift,” an event in which all halls will be used simultaneously in a sequence of performances extending deep into the night.
Many thanks to our friends and partners, and very special thanks to our most wonderful team.
We warmly welcome all participating artists and groups, and invite you, the audience, to enjoy their superb performances.
Come be inspired with us!
